About Sparks NV

Sparks is located in Washoe County just north of Reno, between Fernley and the California state line. It lies North and East of 395 & I-80 on the banks of the Truckee River near Pyramid Lake and Lake Washoe.

In 1904, the town was settled by residents of Wadsworth, who moved after their town was replaced by Sparks as the big switching yard on this stretch of the Southern Pacific Railroad. They named the community after Governor John Sparks, who served from 1905 to 1908 and owned a ranch nearby. The railroad was the city's main employer until the engines were changed to diesel power in 1957, compelling closure of the railroad shops.

Sparks is widely known as the premiere special events venue for all of northern Nevada with attractions on our Victorian Square which bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to such annual events as Hometowne Farmers Market , The Big Easy , Hot August Nights , Nugget Best in the West Rib Cook-off and Hometowne Christmas .

Sparks is also well known for its outstanding Parks and Recreation system designed to appeal to young and old alike with numerous neighborhood parks, regional sports facilities and an unusually large number of fun and exciting recreation programs for pre-schoolers to senior citizens. We are especially proud of the latest addition to our list of parks. Sparks Marina Lake Park is 80 acres of water surrounded by swimming, boating, fishing, scuba diving and picnicking facilities, with breath-taking views of the nearby mountains.
